Philly Wins at Great American Beer Festival

I like the GABF awards.  While the more extreme barrel-aged, imperial, sour beers, etc. get most of the attention in today’s beer world (and they get their share of attention during GABF as well), I like GABF because it’s a time to honor the perfectly-crafted traditional styles.  This bodes well for the Philly region.  We have had our share of barrel aged, imperial, and sour successes, but the true greatness of Philly beer shines through with these traditional styles - the pilsners, bocks, maerzens, and more.  And even better, these amazing beers are actually accessible to you without much effort.

To follow is a list of the Philly region’s (PA, NJ, DE) winners and where you can find them on draft around town (sounds like a perfect bar crawl to me).  Click on the beer to see a beer description and some spots in the Philly area where you find them.  Some of these beers are my favorites from my favorite breweries so I was very excited about this list.

  • Lavery Liopard Oir (French/Belgian style saison) - Although Liopard is not currently available at any PhillyTapFinder bars, find other beers from this great Erie brewery here.

  • Sly Fox Grisette (Belgian/French style ale) - As of the time of this post, Grisette cannot be found on tap, but you may be lucky enough to find a few more kegs over the next couple of months.

  • Penn Brewing Chocolate Meltdown (chocolate beer) - Although Meltdown is not currently available at any of the PhillyTapFinder bars, find other beers from this great brewery here.  I would expect some kegs of Meltdown to arrive again.
  • Yard’s Poor Richard’s Tavern Spruce (indigenous beer) - Although Spruce is not currently available at any of the PhillyTapFinder bars, you can get it at the brewery now.
  • Troegs Sunshine Pils (German-style pilsner) - Although Sunshine Pils is not currently available at any of the PhillyTapFinder bars, find other beers from this great brewery here

Although these beers are pretty much never available at the Philly bars, other area winners include:

  • McKenzie Dark & Stormy (silver - wood & barrel-aged sour)
  • Voodoo 2009 Big Black Voodoo Daddy (silver - aged beer)
  • Marley’s Pack Dog Peanut Butter Ale (bronze - specialty beer)
  • Stewart’s Stumblin’ Monk (gold - Belgian style strong specialty ale)
  • Iron Hill Russian Imperial Stout (silver - imperial stout)

You should go visit these excellent breweries and brewpubs.

With Philly’s amazing national and international import scene, people sometimes forget about how fortunate we are to have so many incredible breweries in the area.  Our GABF successes should remind you that our local breweries should be at the forefront.  I hope that this post helps you find these local beers.
